Unlike fashion, when it comes to manicures and pedicures, pretty much everything is a go – crazy colors? Check. Wild art? Check. Mismatched fingers and toes? No problem. However, there are a few “do’s and don’ts” to follow that will help keep your manicures and pedicures looking flawless.
Don’t cut your cuticles. Cuticles help protect your nails from infection. Cutting cuticles is a purely cosmetic practice.
DO: push back your cuticles, this will achieve the same clean look.
Don’t file your nails in more than one direction. Avoiding this will help prevent them from splitting and weakening!
DO: Invest in a solid file (whether glass, crystal, metal or board) - and make sure you are using the proper grit for your nail type.
Don’t skip base coat - Base coat acts as a barrier and can prevent nails from yellowing or becoming brittle.
DO: Apply a top coat, it acts as a sealer and helps prevent chips. We love cult-favorite Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat and CND Stickey Base Coat.
Don’t forget to moisturize. We all know the importance of moisturizing our face before applying makeup; the same concept applies to hands and feet!
DO: Invest in a cuticle oil! In addition to lotion, cuticle oil is key. Try stashing a portable version like OPI Avoplex Cuticle Oil to Go in your car, purse and bedside table for touchups whenever your cuticles are looking ragged or dry.
Don’t apply polish too thickly. The biggest mistake that can be made with lacquer (especially light and neutral hues) is in the application. Apply thin coats to avoid streaky results!
DO: Ask your manicurist for a polish change. If you’re not particularly gifted in the art of painting your own nails this is the service for you. It’s quick and gets the job done!
DO: Ask your manicurist for nail advice - they know the latest colors, hottest trends, and just like your hair stylist - can give you color advice for your event, outfit, or skin tone.
Don’t pay too much attention to the “rules.” Whether it’s assigning specific colors to certain times of year, pairing unusual shades together, or wearing a trendy hue that’s “so last season,” some rules are simply meant to be broken! “When it comes to nails, nothing is taboo,” declares OPI co-founder and Brand Ambassador Suzi Weiss-Fischmann. “Experimenting is key. Nails are a tool for self-expression and offer a way to accessorize your personal sense of style. The ‘right’ color for your nails is the color you love best.”
