Ceb45789c9e50de0d9c1 stronger nails

Much like a house, nails are only as good as their foundation. If your nails are weak, thinning or peeling, your manicure won’t look as good, no matter how talented your nail tech may be. Ready to give your tips some much needed TLC? Check out the top five ways to grow longer, stronger nails in no time.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Polish removers, soaps and hand sanitizers are just a few things wreaking havoc on your nails. Much like your hair needs the natural oils from your scalp to grow, your nails need to have moisture as well. To ensure your nails are getting the hydration that they need, drink lots of water throughout the day, use acetone-free polish removers when taking off nail color, always apply lotion after washing your hands and make sure to apply cuticle oil every night (coconut oil works great, too!).

Eat right.

Your nail health starts from the inside. Make sure you’re incorporating plenty of healthy fats (i.e. olive oil, coconut oil); protein-rich foods, such as meat, fish, lean poultry; iron-rich leafy greens, such as spinach and kale; and vitamin C-rich fruits and veggies into your diet to encourage optimal nail growth. Also, try taking a multivitamin or a biotin supplement daily to ensure you’re getting all the nutrients you need.

Treat your nails like jewels.

Would you use a diamond ring to pry open a tricky jar? Didn’t think so. The same should be said about your nails. When you use your tips to pull off soda can tops or scrape labels off a surface, you’re comprising the integrity of your nails, leaving them more prone to breakage. Instead, use tools that can help you get the job done (i.e. scissors, a knife, etc.).

Use a nail hardener.

One of the most underrated nail treatments is a nail hardener. Formulated to work with the protein in your nails, this product works to reinforce the nail plate, leaving the nail less prone to breakage, and when used on a regular basis, it will help the nail grow long and strong.

Shape up.

Unfortunately, not all nail shapes promote nail growth and some are actually more prone to breakage than others. If your nails aren’t growing, try sticking with a shorter, more natural-looking nail shape. Your best bet: Opt for a round or oval nail shape.
