Chances are, you wouldn’t let your stylist cut and color your hair without having a full-on consultation beforehand, so why should your nails be any different? Even if you find multiple pictures on Instagram or Pinterest, it’s important to discuss the details of the design you want with your nail tech before any service. Read on to learn how to get perfect tips every time you visit the salon.
Step 1: Show your tech a picture
Come prepared for your appointment with at least one or two photos of the type of nail look you want. Make sure to highlight the details that you love the most about the design (i.e. the color, the gems, etc.).
Step 2: Know Your Products
Be sure to explain to your nail technician that you want to stay with the same line (for base, color and top coats). Using the same system will increase longevity as these products were made to work together.
Step 3: Discuss the basics
Before you let your tech get to work, tell him or her exactly what type of nail shape you want. Oftentimes, techs ask this question right before they begin filing, causing clients to feel pressured to go with the most common shape without considering the final result.
Step 4: Finalize your design beforehand
Once you’ve selected your polish shade, carefully choose the embellishments you want, or discuss the type of nail art you’d like on your nails (marbling, hand-painting, ombre, etc.). This will also give your tech a chance to tell you how much the nail art will cost, leaving you with no surprises when you get the bill.
Step 5: Decide on your finish
Not all top coats are created equal, and gel manicures are no exception. For example, CND Shellac offers an array of top coats to achieve different finishes. In addition to the standard CND Shellac Top Coat, the CND Shellac Alluring Trilogy collection features a matte, glitter and pearl formula to ensure clients get the exact design they want.
